New Podast on "Mobility & In-Vehicle Payments"

In a recent episode of the Leaders In Payments Podcast, industry experts Tom Nipper, Global Head of Energy and Mobility at J.P. Morgan, and Markus Kuhnt, Co-Founder and Chief Technologist at Starfish, joined host Greg Myers to explore the evolving landscape of mobile and in-car payments.

The future of mobile payments is all about processing financial transactions seamlessly, even while transitioning between diverse locations and means of transportation. This inevitably leads to several parties being involved, amplifying both the complexity and cost of payment and transaction processes.

Meanwhile, in-car payment, an integral component of this ecosystem, is starting to reshape every vehicle into a mobile wallet. Enabled by software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and connected cars, this advancement meets consumer demand for frictionless experiences. While, for example, EV charging, payment is made by a card on file virtually invisibly in the background โ€“ the user no longer has to worry about anything.

In-car payment use cases have focused on conventional activities like charging, refueling, toll payments, and parking fees. In these cases, the particular challenge lies in cultivating a payment ecosystem that seamlessly integrates all parties, including automotive OEMs, manufacturers, industry suppliers, and ancillary service providers like gas stations.

However, the potential of this ecosystem extends beyond conventional activities. As mobility undergoes a paradigm shift, especially with the advent of autonomous driving, vehicles are becoming more akin to living spaces. Key considerations involve reimagining the potential activities to fill that new space, and designing this brave new world of mobility represents our paramount challenge, as Markus points out.

That, after all, is why J. P. Morgan and Starfish are coming together: to join forces to embrace this challenge and to offer a comprehensive end-to-end solution that securely stores payment credentials and facilitates smooth, secure transactions at the highest standards.
